Waywayanda State Park is a popular spot for recreation in the Summer and Spring Months of Northern New Jersey (US). Boating, Camping and Fishing – all of these things bring hundreds yearly. It also brings a Ghost Story. The Tales is of several US National Park Forest Rangers, enjoying a ''off day''. Camping ''well off'' the ''beaten track'' (as it were) – the two Rangers built a fire and enjoyed their ''catch'' of the day's fishing. Around 10pm, they heard a rustling coming thru the woods. They soon beheld two other ''Rangers'', possibly attracted to their fire. The Rangers noted that the two ''Men'' looked rather out of place, wearing very old looking uniforms. The ''Rangers'' stated that they were ''checking to make sure the fire was safe, as they had had a very hard fire season''. As the Men rose to talk to their fellow Employees (who neither knew, obviously), The Rangers turned and walked back into the woods. As the Men followed (withing seconds), the two Ranger had vanished into the darkness – FAST. This was odd. The remaining Rangers went to sleep. Upon their return to work, they mentioned the incident to their Supervisor, who laughed. He told the Rangers that they had probably ''met'' The ''Ghostly Rangers'', who are sometimes reported by Campers. The Supervisor said that in the 1930s, two Rangers had been caught in a wildfire and perished. In order to avoid anymore ''loss of life'' it is said that whenever anyone builds a fire in The Forest, ''They'' appear to check that it is a ''safe fire''. It is an enduring Legend with many Forest Rangers stationed at Waywayanda to this day.
