A small extension off of The Coast of The American state of South Carolina (near The City of Charleston). James Island has seen many heroic and sad events. From 18th Century AD Revolutionary War Battles to those of The Civil War of the 1860s, the swampy and marshy lands still hold many secrets and tales. The Civil War was a natural springboard for ''Ghostly Tales'', and James Island has several. The most well known is that of The ''Battle of Battery Tower'' in 1862. South Carolina was the ''powder keg'' that ignited The Civil War in 1861. South Carolina had many hundreds of Fortifications which dotted The Coast and inland jetties. Battery Tower was a small earthen Fort garrisoned by 500 Confederate Soldiers. A Federal Expedition attacked Battery Tower, inflicting hundreds of casualties. Prepared to lose The Fort, the hasty Rebel withdrawal left 150 dead behind unburied. Planning to return, by the time they did, The Swamp had ''reclaimed'' the corpses of the fallen Soldiers. No signs of them were ever found. Since that time, Locals claim they can ''hear The Battle'' (off in the distance on occasion) and have even ''smelled gunsmoke wafting thru the air''. Earlier ''tales'' cite ''weary looking Men'' sometimes seen '' wandering in a daze'' on many of the back roads near the site of the battle. Probably just local superstition and ''wives tales''...........
