Sometimes a series of Ghostly hoofbeats, or a strange translucent figure seen wandering the road holding a candle, both phenomenon are associated with the much "late" Lady Katherine Ferrer - dubbed "The Wicked Lady Ferrer". Here is her story. Born to a Noble and Titled Family in 1634, it was said the Bayford, England Noblewomen wanted more from life that being a well brought up "seat cushion". She lived here life quite out of character for a well-brought up English Lady. She saw no need to marry or have children. She retreated (or was probably "put" in private country residence). Soon Katherine devised a new idea of "fun". A common issue with travel in 17th Century England, was Highwaymen. These were Robbers who preyed on travelers. Stealing their money and possessions (and even their lives in some instances), they were a major issue. Armed with an idea, Lady Ferrer constructed a secret entrance to her Manor House. Donning Men's clothing, she went by horseback to begin robbing travelers - again for fun!
Sword and Pistol at her side, Katherine did very well as a Highwayman. That is until one night when an equally armed traveler decided to resist. Shot through her chest, Katherine was able to get back to the secret entrance of her home - dying in the tunnel. Several weeks later, she was found, wearing her "costume". It was determined that it was she who had committed the crimes. Her Families influence buried all scandal (initially), and all of her "exploits" were swept away. That was however until the 19th Century. Perhaps Katherine's Ghost was annoyed at not being given credit for her "daring exploits", for her Spirit began to again ride the roads in search of her "prey". The Strange "sightings" were actually reported up to the 1950s, when they suddenly all stopped. Some say it was due to her story coming out anyway. Rumors, well researched - proved Katherine was indeed a Highwayman. The story was well worth several books and Movies. With this notoriety, some say Katherine is finally "at rest".
