Fort Georges, located off The State of Massachusetts – was built in 1850. Having many uses prior, The Fort would see it’s most active period during The War Between The States (1861-1865). As a Coastal Defense Fortress, it never saw active combat – but was pressed into service as a Prison for captured Confederate Prisons. It housed close to 200 such Rebels - and also would be host to a classic Ghost Story, born out of a real event involving an escape attempt. In 1864, near the end of The War, a Confederate Officer (Lt. Lanier) was incarcerated at Fort Georges. His Wife would find out where Her Husband was and tried unsuccessfully to see Him. Angered, She cut off Her hair and dressed as a Man. Making Her way to Massachusetts, She set about a plan for Him to escape with Her. Spending many weeks in her ‘’disguise’’ She was able to get messages to Her Husband. A plan, with the help of other Prisoners – planned to did a tunnel to a weakened portion of the Fort’s Perimeter Wall. But before the plan could be et into motion, Our daring Girl was captured by Federal Forces. Charged with being a Rebel Spy, she was hung at The Fort, in full view of Her Husband. He would die of disease (illness) several weeks thereafter.

Since that time, rather odd events are well reported at Fort Georges. Of the 200 Prisoners, (13) of such died in Custody and buried at The Fort Cemetery.  The Lieutenant and His Wife are too – and it seems ‘’She’’ is still harboring a grudge. ‘’Seen’’ at night, dressed all in ‘’Black Dress and Veil’’ – the dubbed ‘’Lady in Black’’ wanders The Fort. A Historic Monument and Site, Staff often find displays ‘’turned over’’ or ‘’broken’’, when they were fine before. Night Security Alarms are set off routinely, even when no one is present. Once, when Security Guards were stationed at The Fort, most refused to come back to work – citing ‘’encounters’’ with ‘’The Lady in Black’’. In 2019, a Confederate Monument from The United Daughters of The Confederacy – was removed due to mounting Public pressure to do so. Plans were even put forward to remove The Confederate Graves. Since then, no reports of The Lady in Black have been made…..Yet!
