The Ghost of Aaron Burr

While American Political Activist and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton is remembered by ''song and story'', little is written of His adversary Aaron Burr. Save Burr's instant name recall as a famous ''murderer'' of Hamilton during a Duel of Honor in the year 1804. And while Hamilton is best remembered for His political acumen and was well mourned at His death – Burr would go on to other controversies. He would be made a villain by not only this act, but was accused of attempting to undermine the newly created United States by forming a self-governing Republic within said Country. Burr would ''beat the charges'' of course. Burr also had a reputation of seeking eligible (meaning wealthy) women capable of ''keeping His ''station'' in life. He found one in Eliza Jumel. Her money would ultimately fund a series of poor land investments created by Burr. The two would reside in an impressive Mansion located in Northern Manhattan (New York State). But by 1836, the two were legally divorced. It was also on this day – Burr died. Burr's reputation and career never recovered from The Hamilton Incident (despite it being an accepted albeit illegal duel of honor).

Since Burr's death, many have reported ''hauntings'' by His Spirit. Oddly, Burr is said to linger in several locations (strange for a Spirit). The first location is a Restaurant called ''The One If By Sea'' – a reference to the Colonial Alarm systems supposedly used by Paul Revere to announce the arrival of British Forces in Boston). While it was not owned by Burr, it is rumored to be occupying ground where Burr's personal carriage house was built. Burr was said to have many horses and carriages and as such – would have spent much time there. Staff of the Restaurant say that ''Burr'' likes to walk ''up and down'' the basement stairs ''constantly''. Reports of Cold Spot and drafts of wind blow thru this location constantly. No windows are present and no sources of such can be found. True, it may NOT be Burr – but His association with the land could make it so.

New York's West Village is another spot for Burr. One a more bustling center of City life in the 18th Century, Burr (and other great names), would have known of the area and walked there. Burr was known to frequent the area to eat and drink. Many say they have ''seen'' and ''felt'' His Presence. But still the best of Burr Haunts is His and His former wife's residence, known as Morris-Jumel Mansion. Fully restored (but privately owned), the Mansion is an excellent example of surviving 18th Century ''wealthy living''. It is also where it is said, Burr's ''Spirit'' is most active. More so because He lived in the home, Burr (or a shadowy Male form), is seen often and ''heard even more'' (walking constantly about the 2nd Floor). Burr is never violent or troublesome. But rumor states that one should NEVER mention the ''name'' of ''HAMILTON''. Broken dishes, slammed doors and other ''things'' have been known to accompany such an act. In a non-related point, Burr may not be the only Ghost at The Mansion. Before Eliza's marriage to Burr, She was accused of killing Her first husband inside the home. ''His'' Spirit is also said to wander it's Halls.
