First recorded in the late 1st Century BC and The Han Dynasty – The ''Five Punishments'' were a form of harsh Judicial recompense for various crimes (mostly Treason and disloyalty to The Emperor). Originally, they were – Tattooing, Nose Amputation, Foot Amputation, Castration and Death. By the 5th Century AD, Involuntary Servitude and Banishment were added. The Punishments were given for the number of violations (mostly) – ranging from 100 to 1,000 such violations. The Qing Dynasty also attached a financial (fine) penalty (16th Century AD). Women too, were not immune from The ''Five Punishments, but theirs were much more easy, with death (when pronounced) accomplished thru ''Ci Si'' (or Suicide). The Punishments would remain the official State punishment until the mid-19th Century AD.
