This "Close Encounter" occurred on August 19, 1952 in West Palm Beach, Florida (US). Scoutmaster Sonny Desverger was transporting 3 of his Scouts home around 9 PM on the night in question. One of the Scouts lived quite a way outside of town (some 10 miles in fact). The drive took the group down a largely dirt road - bordered on either side by thick Palm scrub brush. Halfway down the deserted road, Desvergers noticed a somewhat bright red glow off of the left side of the road in the brush. Resembling fire (and being a good Scout), he stopped his car to investigate. Fearing a flash fire (or at worse a small Plane crash), Desvergers told the boys to wait in the car. He grabbed several flashlights and proceeded to the "fire".
The boys later claimed they could track Desvergers movements by his flashlights. According to Desvergers , when he reached the site, he saw smoke and noticed the ground was smoldering. He could not however find the source of the " red glow".... at present. Desvergers claimed that he suddenly felt the air around him "heat up" and grow "very humid" (as if he was in a Heater). He looked up and noticed he could no longer "see the Stars or sky" above him. He shined his light over his head into the night sky. Deserters soon learned why he could not see the Stars. Some 30 feet above him, was a rounded, Disc-like surface! His flashlight reflected light back at him. He estimated the Object to be roughly 300 feet in diameter. In awe, Desvergers suddenly heard what sounded like a metal door closing. As he turned to run, he was enveloped in the same eerie red light. Desvergers passed out. The boys claimed that they did not see the object, but did witness Desvergers "light up" in a "red light" and fall. Scared, they ran for help to a Farm up the road (known to one of the boys). Telling the Farmer what had happened, he called The State Police
The Police, boys and Farmer went to the site. As they approached, they saw Desvergers running from the scrub, absolutely terrified. He appeared to have a severe sunburn and his clothes were burned. The Police checked the area and found nothing but the smoldering grass. Although they were doubtful of the reported Object, they no doubt found some merit in Desvergers story. They reported the incident to US Air Force Authorities (who in turn sent Investigators from Project: Blue Book). Desvergers was interviewed 3 times. Each account was deemed as "believable". The site was sampled. Although no outward signs of radiation was found, it was found - some 5-inches underground, that the grass roots had been burned by some "unknown source". Desvergers medical examination was strange as well. He had severe dermal burns to all areas of his body NOT covered. Parts of his clothing showed evidence of having been exposed to an "unknown heat source". The Desvergers Case was one of the VERY few that Project: Blue Book listed as UNKNOWN.
