The Derby Pub, in Derby, Derbyshire, England is typical of most British Pubs. Good food, drink and company. It also has it's requisite Resident Spirit. As the story goes, a 17th Century Scullery Maid named Mabel, worked there. Ad with most Pubs and Taverns, Derby had upper floors room to let. Mabel's job wad to maintain them for the occasional guest. Legend also states Mabel wad quite the looker (as the 17th Century would have her). She fell in love with a local boy and had quite the affair. Our story takes it's obvious turn on day, when an Army Recruiting Party came into the Pub. For whatever reason, our young Rake "took The Kings shilling". He was never heard from again, no doubt dying in some War or battle.
This was not only tragic news for Mabel, it was the end for her as well. Our Mabel, you see came up "with child". She would have no doubt lost her position (who wanted a pregnant albeit pretty Scullery Maid). Mabel reputedly hung herself in one of the rooms. Since then, Mabel had been both seen and felt they say. From fleeting mist to her ability to fold guests clothes (left by hurried or drunk guests). Never malicious, Mabel made a name for The Derby Pub. She did so again in 2007 when security cameras captured "something" moving through the bar. Many claim it was a publicity stunt. Others, proof positive that some "employees" are worth keeping!
