The Authors personal favorite for 1950s B -Movie Monsters , 1957s The Deadly Mantis is a B&W Classic. Again set during America's fear of Nuclear War and radiation, this film gave us a Prehistoric Praying Mantis. Due to radiation testing (and an early attempt at Global Warming, a Volcano eruption causes and earthquake at The South Pole. The resulting temblor releases a 150 foot long Giant Mantis (and apparently VERY hungry after 1 Million Years of being encased in ice! Now free (and of course Mantis can fly) it starts to fly through the World destroying everything and anything. It's vibrating wings sound as if a Squadron of Bombers were flying over your head. Making it's way to America (and of course, Washington D.C.) - The Mantis destroys several National Monuments (and is too apparently impervious to artillery and rockets). Eventually our Beast is trapped inside The Manhattan Tunnel (NYC), where it is gassed to death (who knew). A great piece of Horror/Sci-Fi, The Deadly Mantis is a must (at the very least for a giggle!)
