Found near Davenport, Iowa (US) in 1877 – The ‘’Davenport Tablets’’ were said to show intricate carvings associated with Ancient Aztec Art and Culture. Could Aztec Expeditions have traveled as far as The Northern portion of what would become The United States – thousands of years ago? That was the theory put forward with their discovery. So sensational a Story, even the noted Smithsonian Institution became involved with their examination. The Institute ‘’determined’’ The Tablets were (of course) – faked, that The Aztecs could NOT (and would NOT) have traveled so far over land to establish a Colony. But the style of carving and subject matter (Aztec Temples, etc.) – could NOT been carved by Native Americans. Hence, The Tablets were called ‘’Hoax’. Although cataloged by The Institution (photographed, etc.) – The Tablets seem to have ‘’disappeared’’ from The Collection………..
