Hammer Film Studios first in int’s ‘’Frankenstein’’ Series – ‘’The Curse of Frankenstein’’ was released in 1957 and was it’s first color Horror Film. The screenplay was based very loosely on Mary Shelley’s classic Gothic Thriller, it was also the first pairing of ‘’scream greats’’ Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Told from the perspective of Dr. Frankenstein (Cushing), just before He is to be executed, the Story follows the same predictable Frankenstein fare. Doctor sews together parts of different corpse’s, puts in a damaged brain and revives a giant, lumbering Monster (referred to as ‘’The Creature’’). Strange to see Christopher Lee (who took on and held onto the ‘’cape’’ of Count Dracula with Hammer Studios for MANY years), it was the first and last time He played the part of The Monster. Consisting of (6) more Frankenstein’s in he Hammer series (1957 to 1974), Peter Cushing made His ‘’Horror name’’ portraying Dr. Frankenstein in all save one film. ‘’Brightly filmed’’ and ‘’gory’’ (for 1957), The Curse of Frankenstein would garner a sizable Cult following around The World, and is well worth a look.
