The Calaveras Skull

Flatly seen as a Hoax today, The ‘’Calaveras Skull’’ caused much debate in the mid-1860s in Calaveras, California. The odd Human (?) Skull was found in 1866 at the bottom of a Mine Shaft, encased in hardened Lava. After ‘’close examination’’ by (then) Scientists – it was determined the Skull was close to 5 Million Years old. Close to a ‘’Modern Human Skull’’ – it established than Man was far older than thought. In addition, near The Skull was other extinct fossilized bones (Saurian), which also ‘’proved’’ Man had in fact, co-existed with Dinosaurs. The Skull made it’s way to Harvard University (US), and the debate raged on. In the 1880s – it was determined to be a clever Hoax, with The Miner’s coming forward to stated they had taken a Native American Skull (several hundred years old), and passing it off as a ‘’Caveman’’. But another Theory was advanced, that these Men were ‘’paid off’’ to ‘’lie about The Skull’’. By the 1920s, when Science was a bit more advanced, The Skull (which was still at Harvard), was ‘’searched for’’. It had mysteriously vanished. Other than several ‘’sketches of the original’’ find – no trace of The Calaveras Skull was (or is) found or known’’.
