The ‘’Brig of Dread’’ (with Brig being an early 10th Century term for ‘’Bridge’’) – is a concept from Northern England. It was believed that such a construct existed, between ‘’Life and Death’’ (Purgatory). Souls of the recently departed had to traverse such a bridge to achieve one form of eternity (or another). Said to be a ‘’rickety old suspension foot bridge’’, Souls that were ‘’Evil’’ fell off (or thru) – to Hell and Damnation. ‘’Just’’ or ‘’Worthy’’ Souls would be able to cross over without fear – hence ‘’travel onward’’ to Judgment.
