Possibly one of the most famous of Contact/Abduction Cases in history (at least the most investigated and cited), is The Betty & Barney Hill Incident. Occurring in New Hampshire (US), on September 20, 1961, the Case is still debated today. Many facts were presented and many facts were disputed (as was the much later Travis Walton Incident). YOU be the judge if the Couple were telling the truth......or not!
The Hill's were average people in 1960s America. Barney worked for The US Postal Service and his wife, Betty was a Social Worker. They were both college educated. They went to Church regularly and were known to be straight forward and honest people. They were both Activists in the local Chapter of The NAACP (an organization which promotes racial equality, - in a turbulent time in American history). Notwithstanding, The Hill's were average people (for a very brief time that is).
On the night in question, The Hill's were driving back from a vacation from to Niagara Falls (and Canada). The Highway they drove on was dark and they noted few vehicles coming or going. The Hill's had taken their pet dog with them. Growing hungry, the Couple pulled over at a Rest Stop and ate at a picnic table. Barney took their dog for a walk, and Betty sat at the table with Barney's binoculars. Betty later stated that her Sister had confided to her, that she had seen one of those flying saucers recently. Betty thought maybe she would see one too . Betty soon noticed a strange light passing over a nearby mountain top. It stopped in the air and slowly began to move towards the Rest Stop. Betty called over to Barney to see the light. Taking the binoculars, Barney noticed the bright light coming closer and closer. Soon (through the brightness) Barney said he could make out that the light was actually an Object with many windows. Barney said he thought he saw people inside . Scared (the Object was almost right on top of them), the Couple and their dog ran to their car. Starting it, they drove down the road at a fast speed. Suddenly, the Object was directly in front of them on the road. Just as suddenly, The Hill's car just stopped. The Hill's both said that the inside of the car filled with a bright light . Barney said he felt heat. Next, nothing. The Hill's woke up inside their car. They saw no lights and no Object. Shaken, they continued on home.
Upon reaching home, The Hill's started to notice strange things. Both of their wrist watches had stopped at 9:45 P.M. (the time of the encounter). It was now well after 1 A.M. (having only taken 30-minutes to reach home from the sight of the encounter). Betty also noticed that her dress was ripped in places (as was Barney's clothes). Betty and Barney also noticed a strange purplish dust on both their clothes. Barney also noted that the leather strap to his binoculars was cut in two. The Couple's dog also was acting strange (scared and withdrawn). Within the next several day, both complained of severe headaches -especially when trying to remember what had happened to them. They experienced night terrors and waking up in a cold sweat. They decided to go to the Doctor.
The Couple were examined by Doctors. They could find no cause for the headaches. They also noted strange marks on their bodies (that the Couple could not explain). Many of the marks appeared to resemble surgical scars . After partially relating the story to a sympathetic Doctor he recommended a Hypo-Therapist. Betty went first. What was learned was incredible. Betty claimed that with the bright light inside their car, came several Beings, best described as Grays . They told Betty and Barney not to be afraid. Betty was calm, but Barney was aggressive and was restrained .
The Hills would eventually recount their story to The World. Media (both Print and TV). With the popularity of UFOs, they and their stories made them celebrities (of sorts). Soon however, came the detractors. Experts started citing that they were hoaxers, having made up the story to garner publicity for The NAACP (Betty and Barney were an interracial Couple, again a controversial subject at the time). They both were ridiculed. Barney lost his job with The Government. The Hill's were approached in 1966 for permission to publish their encounter. The Interrupted Journey was a National Best Seller. In 1975, their encounter was developed into a Made-for-Television film (based on the book). It was a ratings smash. Barney's headaches would continue until they ended in 1969 with his death from a cerebral hemorrhage. Betty would survive until 2004 (when she died at 89 years old!). She never recanted her story. Later in life, Betty stated that she still had their clothes and watches from that night (with the dust as well). She never showed them or had them tested. Upon her death, this box of evidence was NEVER found.
