In Mythology, St. George was said to have slew The Dragon (representing The Devil or simply Evil). His Origins can be traced to Ancient Rome forward. The idealized (Medieval) version of The Knight St. George was an important “virtue teaching” Tale. As discussed, The Sword of St. George was an obvious Medieval construct to symbolize this. However, as the Legend states, St. George used a specialized Spear known as The Ascelon to dispatch The Dragon. The Ascelon was seen as a very long Menaullion-style Spear with a Cross-bar handle. Based on the typical depiction of “The Dragon”, The Ascelon was in excess of 12-feet long. It would have been forged of one solid Metal component. Many Scholars cite that The Ascelon boears a striking resemblance to The German Zweihander (or 2-Handed “Great Sword”). Often, St. George is depicted wielding such a Blade, rather than The Ascelon.
