Another campy (but interesting) B -Movie from 1957, The Colossal Man actual was popular enough to spawn several sequels (unusual for 1950s Low Budget films). Incorporating America's growing fears of Atomic Weapons testing and radiation the film presents us with Glenn Manning. A USAF Colonel, he is supervising yet another test of the A-Bomb. 15-minutes to detonation in the Desert, a wayward plane crashes near the bomb site. Manning drives to the location to rescue the downed Pilot. Unable to reach him in time, Manning is caught in the blast! Although he isn't instantly incinerated (suspend disbelief), he is horribly scarred (and loses an eye). There is another unexpected side effect to the exposure. Manning starts to grow 10 foot per day. After the end of a week he is now 60 feet tall (and driven insane). Manning begins to destroy Las Vegas, Nevada (crushing people, cars, destroying buildings, etc). Bullets only slow him down (another advantage of radiation exposure, apparently). Captured at Boulder Dam using his Sister (who Manning apparently remembers somewhere inside his feverish mind), he is taken under guards (and chains) to a Secret Hanger in Los Angeles, California. Set to be marooned on an uninhabited island in The Pacific (for everyone's own good), Manning escapes and starts to destroy Los Angeles! Preparing to kill 30 people inside a bus, Manning's Sister finds him and once again convinces him to stop. In a lucid, Human moment Manning remembers who he was (an Officer) and what he has become. He grabs some nearby electrical tension wires and electrocutes himself. FUN FACT: The Colossal Man was the basis for Dr. Bruce Banner (of Comic Book fame)- better known as The Incredible Hulk .
