Surma

 A Finnish legendary beast, The Surma were said to be great Hounds with a snake-like tail. They had the power to turn their victims into stone. The Surma was said to guard The Gates to Tuonela (The Underworld). If a living human tried to pass, they would be turned to rock (only the dead were immune). If a living human shielded his eyes from their gaze, they would maul them to pieces.
