Of Ancient Roman origins – ‘’Stata Mater’’ was a Goddess linked to The Mares. Mare, as we have seen – were a form of Household Spirits. These could be both ancestral or natural. Stater Mater was invoked to protect against fires. Fire was a very common problem in Rome, with one ember literally capable of burning down whole neighborhoods or even The City itself. Her Cult goes back to at least 7 BC and would last until The 8th Century AD. Shrines were common, both private and Public – with those who staffed City Fire Brigades, revering Her as Their Patron Goddess.
