Another early Martyr of The Christian Church – ''Defendens'' of Thebes was one of St. Maurice's Legion of Rome soldiers. Like Him (and others in His Unit), he followed Maurice in His conversion to Christianity. Refusing to follow Rome's orders, Defendens was one who was subjected to Decimation (or every other soldier in a Legion to executed). One of Muarice's Companions (2nd AD) – His Cult was venerated around the early 14th Century AD Europe. His name was invoked by soldiers as a form of protection in battle. Later, Defendens was venerated as protection against wolves and fire in Northern Italy.
