Sopona

In The Yoruban Culture of Africa, ‘’Sopona’’ is a particularly ‘’nasty’’ Deity (Demon), responsible for the spread of that dreaded disease Smallpox. Seen by The Tribe as a curse for some ‘’disrespect to The Gods’’, Sopona ‘’moved’’ quickly thru a Region, infecting and ultimately killing most of those who became infected. To ward off the ‘’wrath’’ of Sopona – Shrines with figurines of The God (an impish Being, covered in pox pustules), which was offered a multitude of sacrifice. In truth however, Sopona could blamed from everything from poor sanitation and hygiene, to early European contact.
