The Snake Pit, is a form of Torture-Execution which is perhaps among the oldest used. The simple construction method - is a dug pit (Human or natural formed), into which was placed hundred of poisonous serpents (Snakes). The Execution of Sentence (and there were many), was to push the Victim over the edge to fall into The Pit (from which they would be bitten to death to slowly die of Serpent venom). Popular with many Ancient Cultures as a means of Execution – The Snake Pit was seen in general use well into the 14th Century AD in Europe. In The America's, The Native American Apache Tribe were quite found of this form of punishment towards Their Enemies.
