Based on the 3rd Century AD personage Nicholas, Greek Bishop of Myrna (Present Day Turkey), Sinterklass developed in The Netherlands. He is portrayed as an Elderly Man, wearing the Clerical Robes of a Church Bishop. He is kind to Children who are good. His Holiday starts on December 6th, the Feast Day of the real St. Nicolas. Unlike the traditional Santa Claus of Europe, Sinterklaas rides into town on a White Horse. He is assisted by The Zwarte Piet, who resemble Moors. They are somewhat mischievous little creatures, similar to Santa s Elves.

Sinterklaas gives food and candies to all deserving Children as he rides through the streets of Danish Towns, and his appearance is considered to be good luck and fortune. By the 16th Century, the Sinterklaas tradition was spread to Spain and Portugal. To prepare for the arrival of Sinterklaas, Dutch Children prepare by setting out Kruidnoten. These are small Ginger Cookies left by a chimney as a gift for Sinterklaas. However, unlike Santa Clause, although the Cookies do disappear, Sinterklaas doesn t not go into a house. His Zwarte Piet leave a burlap sack with presents outside of the door. A knock announces their presence. In other Countries that follow The Sinterklaas Tradition, instead of Ginger Cookies, Chocolate treats in the shapes of Letters are left as a gift for Sinterklaas. The Letters arepresent thise in his name. Often a cup of hot Coffee is also offered.
