An American Urban Legend (of sorts), involves the many stories of Alligators that live in the sewers of New York City. Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, many Pet Stores in America cashed in on the pet Alligator craze. It seems every kid wanted a pet baby Alligator. So much so, that The State of Florida (next to Oranges) made Baby Alligator sales the number one export . However, kids get bored very quickly and many of the poor pets were disposed of. But how does one dispose of a Baby Alligator. Simple. Many were flushed down toilets or thrown into sewer drains. As the legend goes, these Babies grew unchecked. 10, 20 even 50 feet were said to be some of the so called lengths. In other versions, mutated by pollution these Gators were growing to 100 and 200 feet long (living on consuming the errant Homeless population forced to live underground!) The only proof ever offered was various State of New York Department of Subways requests for .22 Rifles and ammunition to be use in disposing of Pests . Many Biologists and Zoologists claim that Alligators cannot survive in the sewers (due to pollution and other factors).
