The Schandmantel or ''Coat of Shame'' was a 13th Century German ''variation'' of The Barrel Punishment – used for Public Humiliation for certain crimes (normally of lesser offenses). The Schandmantel was made of cast iron (originally) and shaped very much as an upturned bucket. The head was free at the top (but sealed to the neck) and the legs above the thigh were like wise free for movement (but too greatly restricted in overall movement). The Victim had His leg chained to prevent escape. When exposed to excessive heat and cold, victims could very well die as a result. By the 18th Century, heavy oaken Schandmantels were used exclusively. Crimes which warranted it's usage was for continued public intoxication and prostitution. It's usage would continue well into the early 20th Century in some German Village
