Sangoma

In The Zulu (South African) Culture – a ‘’Sangoma’’ is NOT a ‘’Witch Doctor’’ or more properly Healer. Their sole purpose is to ‘’protect’’ those who ‘’hire Them’’ – from ‘’Evil Spirits’’. Sangoma are only chosen from girls who come from Family with a Sangoma lineage. Starting young, sometimes as early as 5 years, The Sangoma learns of specially prepared herbs and various rituals needed to remove Spirits or to keep them from harming others. Sangoma also use various talisman to ‘’ward off’’ Spirits. One of the more popular is known (today), as Sangoma Beads. These are small brass wristlets worn on the right wrist. Brass is seen as a type of metal which causes ‘’pain’’ to Evil Spirits.
