From Ancient India's Pantheon of Gods, Rudra was said to be the Ruler of all The Dead. He keeps all evil Spirits at bay, else they would return to Earth and destroy the living (as it was thought). People were expected to make yearly offerings to Rudra as a way of appeasing him. If one did not - hence haunting and demons. IF everyone were to STOP offerings, Rudra will gather up an Army of The Dead and attack!
