Seen as the personification of The City of Rome – as far back as 9th Century BC, ‘’Roma’’ was a perceived ‘’City Goddess’’ of protection. Said to be descended from Amazonian Legend, Roma (if properly venerated), maintained the ‘’peace and prosperity’’ of The City. No invaders or civil strife could destroyed The ‘’Eternal City’’. The very City itself took it’s name from Her. Often, several great celebrations and festivals were held (August), to honor and give thanks to Roma and for Her protection. Roma would become one of the first symbols used in Rome’s earliest minted coinage. When Rome occupied Britain, Her image may have well influenced the creation of ‘’Britannia’’, the personification of later Great Britain.
