A very popular ''Story'' circulated around France in the 13th Century. Robert was a Norman Knight of ''great skill and courage''. Try as he might, he found that he could not produce Children. A “Goodly Man”, Robert learns that his Mother had a tryst with The Devil – of which Robert was the “issue”. Learning of his ghastly lineage, Robert (who lived a Godly life and was a Pillar of The Code of Chivalry), is now facing the dual nature of his personality. Should he be “Good or Bad” or do “Bad for Good's sake (and visa versa). Tempted by The Devil and aided by Angels, Robert eventually proves his mette to God (saving The Church in Rome from The Saracens). He is allowed to marry and produce young. The tale was used for many Centuries as a Morality Lesson. With the advent of the Printing Press, “Robert The Devil” would become one of the most popular circulated Stories of The Mid to Late Middle Ages.
