The Legend of The Petermannchen comes from Mecklenburg, Germany. The Entity lives at Schwerin Palace. This spirit wanders the halls of The Palace at night (carrying a large set of keys and a Lantern). As The Petermannchen unlocks doors (they remain open). No matter how the Palace Keepers try, Petermannchen unlocks and opens doors. In the past, if he catches soldiers asleep at their Guard Post (with The Palace) he will crash objects and make a dreadful noise until the violator awakens. Some state that The Petermannchen is a Pagan Spirit , just trying to get along in this new World of Christianity . Other stories identify The Petermannchen as the ghost of a 15th Century Blacksmith (who died before completing his Commission from Palace Royalty). The activity has lessened (but not stopped) since first recorded around the 16th Century.
