A quaint "Ghost Story" from America, is that of "Ocean Born Mary". Born in Ireland (1720), her real "given" first name is not known. What is known, is that as a small child, her and her Parents were emigrating to America. Legend states that the infamous Pirate Pedro Gilbert attacked their ship. Before he and his crew could start their "work", the young child was scared and crying, so much that it "touched" the hardened Pirate. So much so, that he said he would spare the ship, if the Parents would only re-name the child after his deceased Wife. They did and the young "Wallace" (last name), became "Mary Wallace".
Her tale grew in the Town of Henniker, New Hampshire (where she settled). A tall red haired and green eyed Lass, she wad called "Ocean Born" Mary - affectionately. Well liked, Mary grew and married. She had 4 Sons. Much later in life, Mary's husband died. Thinking her lot to die alone, a figure from her past returned - none other that Captain Pedro Gilbert. Pardoned for his life of Piracy, the two fell in love and married. They stayed such until Mary's death at 90. Now Gilbert was a somewhat successful Pirate, who allegedly kept much of his "Loot". Never telling anyone but his beloved Mary, she is said to be seen still, wandering the cliffs near Town "guarding" her Husband's treasure.
