These Southern German and Austrian creatures go back to The Middle Ages. Similar in disposition to the English Bugbear , they are mean and aggressive beasts. Said to be part-Raven (or Crow) and part-human, The Nachtkrapp only travels at night. If a child sees them leaving their well hidden nests, they will hunt them down and peck out their hearts. Some stories have The Nachtkrapp simply gathering up wayward or bad children into a great bag. They go back to their nests and then devour them. The legend was used to get children to behave and go to bed.
