Similar to the Ancient ‘’punishment’’ known as Damnatio Memoriae, The German ‘’version’’ was known as ‘’Nacht Und Nebel’’ or translated to ‘’Night and Fog’’. The earliest example being around the 17th Century AD, when Composer Richard Wagner incorporated it into one of His Operas. Seized upon by Nazi Germany, - in particular The Secret Police (‘’Gestapo’’) and SS, ‘’Night and Fog’’ was used after political victims were executed. According to the 1941 ‘’Code’’ crafted by Heinrich Himmler, such persons had all traces of their existence ‘’removed’’. Any official records were destroyed as were (if possible) anyone close enough to the victim, to identify the fact that The State ‘‘murdered them’’. A variation of ‘’Night and Fog’’ was adopted early in The Concentration and Labor Camps, concentrating of Jewish and other non-Aryan peoples. Effective, it became hard to maintain by late 1944, when World War II became centered in Germany.
