From Norway, these evil female Demon/Spirits, are also Shapeshifters. They can appear ugly or beautiful. They enter a male victims room at night when they are asleep - and only enter through a keyhole or open window. Once inside, they will sit on the chest of the unfortunate, causing him tightness of chest, stop one's breathing, inability to move and cause horrible nightmares. In fact the word "Nightmare" is attributed to The Mare Legend. They are also blood-drinkers. If no human prey is found, they will attack animals. During daylight, Mares assume the form of a "motherly, older woman" - to hide among humans. Several methods of protection can be used. One is to never sleep with your mouth open (as The Mare can enter one's body this way). Also, one can place their shoes under the bed with the toes pointing away from the bed. In this way, The Mare will not be able to find their victim. It is said that The Mare will die if they have to count human teeth. Sometimes, people would keep a jar of teeth - to throw on the floor in case of attack. The Mare cannot stand laughter, church bells or crowds. It is also said that if one keeps a horseshoe over the bed, they will not be able to attack. The wearing of any form of metal around the neck will keep The Mare at bay.
