''Mami Wata'' is a South African Myth which by virtue of Slavery, was ''transplanted'' into both North and South America. While they are most portrayed as Female, a Mami Wata can also be a Male. Typically, The Mami Wata are classed as ''Elemental Spirits'' (in particular Water Entities). Translated to mean ''Mother Water'' The Mami Wata are ''seen'' as Hybrid Beings similar to Mermaids, but with Snake, Fish and other water borne animals. They are Protectors of all that inhabit water (even those that live on land closely supported by such). By tradition, Woman can gaze into water and ''summon'' The Wata. Upon seeing Her ''reverse reflection), the Summoner must make an offering (a comb, trinket or related). If Mami Wata ''accepts'' the offering, ''She'' will grant the ''wish'' (most often a chosen faithful husband). However, if Mami Wata ''refuses'', the chosen Mate will be met with ill fortune (so much so linked to His Chosen, He will think Her ''Bad Luck'' and not marry). The Wata was also invoked by Shaman as a means of instilling great ''sexual abilities'' and fertility. May who still ''worship'' The Wata Cult state that by worship, good fortune and wealth is ''visited'' upon the faithful, while lack of worship brings ill fortune and poverty.
