As we have seen with other "Out of Place" Artifacts, the term applies to any so-called "Modern" Object or device found (from an archaeological perspective), in or at a location from an entirely different and implausible Era or Time. The Los Lunas Decalogue Stone is a worthy member of this debated "Club". The Stone is actually a bolder, and located in The Hidden Mountains of Los Lunas, New Mexico (North of The City of Albuquerque). Also known as "The Mystery Stone" and "Commandment Rock", these nicknames become well a parent upon closer examination of the rock.
Upon closer investigation, the rock is inscribed with a series of letters and phrases, linking them to a Paleo-Hebrew alphabet, seen in the 10th Century BC. Further, the inscriptions go on to form an abridged version of none other than The Ten Commandments! This is even more confusing due to the fact that the first reported (or at least accepted) European Explorers did not reach America for several thousand more years, begs one to wonder "how the stone got there" and more importantly - "who" carved it The "legend" of The Stone is first recorded in 1933, when Archaeologist Dr. Frank Hibben first "saw" The Rock (when a local Nature Guide showed him). The Guide stated that the tale went back as far as the 1880s. Thus far, no branch of Science considered The Rock real (rather a hoax). Weighing at the 80-tons, no one wished the expense of moving it to a Lab for proper analysis.
To make matters worse, literally thousands of Visitors over the years have come to Los Lunas to see and "touch" The Stone. As such, valuable surface Patina has been lost to time (as well as the slow erosion of various lettering). Those who believe in The Stone's authenticity, cite these kind of carvings were prominent over Jewish Homes and other important structures. So what is The Mystery Stone A clever hoax from the late 19th Century or actual proof of an Ancient Colony of Hebrew Peoples Perhaps it is a fragment from a Time Vortex, accidentally ripped from one Era and "dropped" into another We may never know....
