Child birth was a dangerous proposition for Ancient Roman Women – regardless of social status. To ensure that babies were born safe (and for the protection of The Mother as well), ‘’Levana’’ was often invoked for protection’’ The ‘’Minor’’ Deity, had an obscure Cult – of which little is known. Small Shrines dedicated to Her, normally placed within a Roman House, were made when a Woman became pregnant. Sacrifices of blood (small pricks made to finders and hands), were gathered into cups or bowls and ‘’offered’’ to Her. If ‘’shunned’’, Levana may pull Her overwatch – resulting in stillbirth or the death of a Mother as well.
