Lemures

As we have seen with the Roman Manes ("Good Ghosts") - their opposite was The Lemures. According to Ancient Roman legend, these were the Spirits of evil or ''cursed'' ancestors. Said to reappear after death in "somewhat human" form - some versions of the story have them quite fiercesome looking. A common method for controlling a possible Lemures from returning to "life", was to put burnt black beans around the fresh grave (or crypt). This would trap The Lemure. These Spirits were most active during the Month of May.
