The Nepalese Demon known as ''Lakhey'' can be traced back in myth for Centuries. They are particularly prominent in Newar Culture. They are ''Forest Demons'' who can be invoked to protect a particular Village or Town from harm. A tradition in many Villages, even today is to once a year ''call forth'' a Lakhey Demon for protection. As such. A performer dresses as The Lakhey wearing a large wooden and stylized Mask. The Lakhey have Red Faces and long, black flowing hair. A somewhat frightful visage is painted on the mask and it is though this is ''how'' The Lakhey ''scares off'' rival Demons. The Lakhey dance is characterized by ''wild movements'' and loud thumping drums also seen as a method to scare off harmful demons. The Lahkey have different ''Classes'' of Demons, some who are not so content to help Humans. These are Fire Lahkey. They are blamed for fires that start ''mysteriously''.
