According to Polynesian Mythology, ''Kuku Lau'' was a ''Nature Deity'', seen as a ''Trickster''. She was portrayed as a ''Beautiful Female''. She liked to float upon the waters using Her obvious ''charms'' to cause Sailors to sail towards Her (often to their doom by hitting underwater reefs and other sailing hazards). In another version, Kuku Lau ''becomes'' a ''false horizon'', causing Ships to sail off course and get lost. Although no real reason is ever given as to ''why'' She torments sailors so, some attribute the acts to a time when She fell in love with a Human Sailor who misused Her trust and abilities (as a Goddess). As such, Kuku Lau seeks revenge against the vocation.
