A ''Legend'' from several Scandinavian Countries, the term ''Jenny Haniver'' was first recorded in the 15th Century AD. Many Sailors said that there were a Race of ''diminutive'' Sea Demons who followed Ships. Once captured, They died quickly (out of water).Their remains were dried and brought back to various European Ports as ''proof'' of the Sea Creatures. Their name ''Jenny Haniver'' was an Anglican ''bastardization'' of the French phrase ''Jeune d'Anvers''. The ''Creatures caused quite a stir until Their ''real'' origin was made known. In reality, The ''Beasties'' were Sea Skates – cut in such a way as to give them the appearance of ''legs and arms'' – as well as ''facial expressions''. So dried in Salt (mummified), The poor Skates were then passed off as the bizarre Sea Creatures. Some Coastal Scandinavian Countries still ''make'' Jenny Hanivers'' – to the morbid delight of Tourists.
