Iwa (Voodoo)

The ‘’Iwa’’ is a term used to identify a class of Lesser Spirit -invoked or venerated in Caribbean Folk Religions. Skin to the previously mentioned Loa, Iwa are formed into (2) Types. These are Animal and Human. The confusing element of Their ‘’Human Identity’’ is that an Iwa need not have ‘’been born’’ to be seen as Human. The Iwa are invoked thru Ritual, normally by frenzied dances and the consumption of alcohol or psychoactive elements (mushrooms, plants etc.) They inhabit (possess) a Body for the purpose of revealing a solution to a problem or – as a means of providing protection.
