Perhaps much of The ''Legend of Faust'' could be traced to this tale. It originates from The Gelderland Province of The Netherlands. It is said to go back to the 12th Century AD. Within Gelderland stands Waardenburg Castle. The Castle, while it saw no ''battles'' is nonetheless, one of the most haunted places in The Netherlands. It is claimed that an Alchemist one owned The Castle. Working with strange potions and spells some claim He called forth The Devil to curry favor. ''Old Scratch'' gave in, but put a time on The Favor. After 7 years, The Alchemist's soul would be forfeit. Another tales has a Young Man committing murder in The Castle, his bloodstained hands leaving prints up the Tower Walls, leading to the top where he jumped to his death. In this story, even though the walls have been cleaned and painted many times over the centuries, the ''stains'' return. Cold spots, horrid odors, spectral figures Waardenburg Castle is rife with ''Visitors'', most of which aren't ''Alive''.
