Now a ''modern'' BNB (''Bed and Breakfast'') for those so inclined, Herr Tavern dates to 1815 and is located in Adams County, Pennsylvania (US). In particular, the Township of Gettysburg. As you would expect, the very name (Gettysburg) illicits immediate images of Hauntings and Ghosts. Yes, The Tavern too is seen as a ''hotspot'' for Paranormal Activities, and ones that can be very disturbing as well. The Tavern was a very popular location for early Travelers in the 19th Century, being one of very few in a large Region of mostly unsettled Pennsylvania. Late, it would serve as a Terminus for escaping Slaves from The South, as part of the famed ''Underground Railroad''. But it was with The Civil War of Gettysburg that Herr Tavern began to earn it's name in Paranormal History.
With Confederate Forces moving into the Region first, and establishing their battlelines, The Federal Forces had to quickly rush to establish theirs. Continual and pitched engagements erupted often between the several major clashes of The Battle. Wounded and dying Soldiers began to overwhelm both sides. The first structure commandeered by Southern Forces as a Field Hospital was Herr Tavern. As documented by many letters and observations of the time, witnesses stated that the main portion of the Tavern's Dining Area became used to quickly amputate legs and arms, mangled by Enemy Shot. The limbs were simply thrown out of a nearby window, where they ''heaped up'' in a gruesome pile. They were buried their (supposedly), and still are (although most assume that they were moved long ago). After The Battle and War, The Tavern would be renovated and would go back to it's original intention of being a location for ''good food and good times''. But ''something'' was NOT going to allow this to happen it seems.
As a Tavern, One could not only eat and drink, but rent a room to rest. Since the 1880s Guests have reported very strange happenings in the rooms. Cold Spots and Shadow Figures are VERY common features. In addition, the ''foul smell'' of rotting flesh is also reported (although not with as much frequency as in the past). Very ''negative emotions'' can sometimes be felt by those in the Dining Room, near a ''particular window'' (as referenced in Our Story above). Investigated by many Paranormal Investigators over the years, The Tavern does show ''strong Energy'' with Psychics reporting may ''lost and confused'' Spirits still wandering there. The Tavern is still a VERY popular spot to dine and visit, perhaps even more so due to it's ''unique'' backstory.
