In The Lovecraftan vein of inhuman Deities, Ambrose Bierce's ''Hastur'' first appeared in His 1893 Horror Short Story ''Haita The Shepherd''. Bierce was an American Civil War Officer turned Writer, best known for His Short Tale ''An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge''. The Being was also mentioned by HP Lovecraft. Hastur is a malevolent Protector, who is neither ''Being or Deity''. He is shown often as a formless, tentacled blob. He is unusual in that he is opposed to the Human conquering Great Old Ones.
