A classic ‘’modern’’ example of Media completely fooling MOST people, The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) in 1992 pulled an ''Orson Welles’’ on the British People, with the airing of a Horror ‘’mockumentary’’ called ‘’Ghostwatch’’. Much as Welles did in 1938 on American Radio with His ‘’War of The Worlds’’ Alien Invasion Broadcast, despite numerous on-air ‘’warnings’’ that what was heard (or in this case) seen, was NOT real, those viewers tuning in late actually believed what They saw was real. The Production was filmed as if a News Crew was actually investigating a REAL haunted house. The ‘’back story’’ of the alleged ‘’Ghost’’ was linked to a 19th Century ‘’Baby Farmer, cross-dressing Serial Killer’’ named ‘’Pipes’’. The terrifying visage (thanks to great make-up and effects), caused so much fervor – The BBC-1 received thousands of panicked phone calls (as well as local Police Stations). No realistic, even The British Government got involved – with regards to ‘’how’’ such a thing could be taken seriously. For MANY years any future airings were banned (it was originally shown on Halloween Night – another tip of the hat to Orson Wells). Re-released Internationally in 2017 on various Mediums, a DVD Boxed Set was also made available in 2013. But still, ‘’Ghostwatch’’ had NEVER been re-aired on British Television.
