The Galley Beggar is "native" to Northern England - and appears to have originated around the 15th Century. The name "Gally" from the Old English - is translated to mean "frighten or scare". This is apparently just what The Galley Beggar does! Seen normally as a skeletal spirit (with or without clothes), they like to hide and scare people. Often, they will pull off their head to achieve their goal! What constitutes becoming a Galley Beggar is equally unclear.
