In 1972, ‘’Eco-Horror’’ was quite popular. In a Generation when Nuclear War, Natural Disaster and intense Pollution threatened The World (sound familiar?), movies about ‘’Mother Nature’’ finally ‘’getting even’’ with Humanity were King. Most were classed as ‘’B’’-Movie (low budget) ‘’clap traps’’, but that being said, some were great fun – regardless of their overall sill premise. So when ‘’Frogs’’ was released generally, it’s was hyped (as most Movies were), with outrageous advertising Posters (most of which had little or nothing in common with the actual Film). For Frogs, it was a ‘’Giant Frog with a Human Hand’’ protruding from it’s mouth. No worse than PT Barnum – the ‘’gag’’ worked (it got you into the Theater or Drive-In).
Our Plot is a Southern patch of Land owned by a Wealthy Family. He makes His money off of pollution, de-forestation and the complete wiping out of whole eco-systems. The Plantation Owner it seems has a particular issue with Frogs. Their constant croaking at night (in the thousands), begin to drive Him nuts. He begins to pump tons of poisons into the Swamp. Suddenly, (ala Hitchcock’s ‘’The Birds’’) – ‘’Nature’’ revolts. Rats, Snakes, Gators – fairly all ‘’Swamp Life’’ becomes an Army and besieges The Plantation (but oddly, very few Frogs). With most of the Family escaping save our The Owner, Nature surrounds The Home. The power goes out and He is trapped in His Den…surrounded by the stuffed animal Trophies He collected. The constant ‘’croaking’’ grows louder until His ‘’guilt’’ causes a heart attack and dies. Nature ‘takes over’’ – it seems. The Film wasn’t taken all too serious when released, but it did get it’s message thru. It was one of the more popular of it’s Genre, and is sadly hard to find. If you do, give it a view. It’s bad…it’s good…it’s FROGS!
