A "real" Monster or perhaps slandered "Heroine", The Countess Elizabeth Bathory of Hungary is remembered to History as one of the worst female serial killers to date. Known as "The Tigress of Csejte", "The Countess of Blood" even a nod to Vlad Tepes as "Countess Dracula". History details her crimes - with a twist. Here is her story. Born into Hungarian Nobility in 1560, she descended from a powerful Family. Well educated, she was entered into an "arranged" marriage by her Father to the Son of Baron Nadasdy. The couple was given Csejte Castle in The Carpathian Mountains.
Her husband went to War against The Turks during The Long War (1595-1603). Elizabeth ran her Husbands business affairs including establishing defenses for their Castle and defense of his surrounding villages. Upon his death from wounds received in battle, Elizabeth turned to a solitary life with plenty of servants to attend her. In this her story really begins. For many years, stories surfaced of hundreds of local and surrounding Region girls going missing. Many were said to have been invited to the Bathory Castle ad either servants or to attend classes in "Ladyship" (so as to be able to raise their station on life). The Countess was known for enjoying the company of young beautiful girls.
As the years went by, all were amazed with The Countess' ability to remain so young and beautiful. But still, what was happening to all the girls in the Region. Then several of her servants came forward with tales of murders and atrocities. Local Authorities investigated and arrested The Countess. The matter had to be handled with delicacy due to her position (and influence with Royalty).
300 witnesses came forward. They told tales of sadism and blood-letting which would have been the envy of another well known Aristocratic villain - Vlad Tepes. Bodies and skeletal remains were found. Some witness statements declared The Countess drained her victims of their blood, only to collect in vats for bathing in! It was said it was the "key" to her "immortality". Due to her station, the death penalty was "off the table" -as it were. Her servants (4 of which were convicted as helping her with her crimes), were not so lucky. They died by hanging, decapitation and other forms of slow exterminations!
Condemned to the very Castle she was given as a wedding present, Elizabeth wad placed in her Master Bedroom and walled inside. All windows were bricked as was all entrances (save an opening for food and water. In 1614, her Guard reported that she complained of being cold. When she did not Rake her food for several days, her room was opened. Elizabeth Bathory was dead (and appeared quite aged!). Taken to her Family Crypt in Ecsid, Hungary - The outrage so that her body was removed to an unknown location (which is likewise still unknown). Her final "body count" was said to gave been 650.
Many feel that Elizabeth wad the product of persecutions by Lutheran Authorities (in power at the time, and violently against any vestige of Hapsburg control, of which Elizabeth claimed in her "bloodlines"). As a practicing Calvinist, she was seen as a threat. But still, where did the bodies come from and even more curious, did her ritual "blood baths" really work. It wad said that at 46 years old, she looked 20. At her death, no longer able to indulge in her nightly "ritual", she looked 100.
