A tool used by Paranormal Investigators, the theory of Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or EVP, involves using audio recording devices to "capture" reputed "voices" of Spirits. The phenomenon is naturally hotly debated by skeptics the Worldwide. First experimented with in 1941 by Researcher Attila Von Szalay, he used 78-rpm record and phonograph recording equipment to "capture" some of the earliest "sounds" of possible Ghosts and Spirits. Later, in 1956, - he switched to Reel-To-Reel equipment. Using this research, Konstantins Raudive in the 1970s, began to further the work. He collected over 100,000 examples of "Ghost Voice". His collection is known as "The Raudive Recordings", and are often used to establish "base lines" prior to most attempts.

The first "modern" attempt to create a "two-way" communicator was in 1980 by William O'Neil. The device was proven unsuccessful. Only slightly better was Frank Sumpton's "Ghost Box", using an AM Receiver. Today's technology uses software specifically designed for computer use. Most of this equipment includes filters and visage monitoring for "real time" visualization. The practice is quite simple. Investigators enter a "target area" (a location reputed haunted or experiencing Paranormal phenomenon). EVP devices are activated. The investigators asked "pre-determined" questions. These questions involve a certain level of previous research. The questions are asked in a "calm and plain tone", as if speaking normally to "another person". After the experiment is completed, the recording can be played back in "real time". Often "answers" or "responses" to questions can be heard.

A common problem is that all forms of electrical equipment must be off and or unplugged from their power sources. This is particularly true of television and radio devices. Often, frequencies still broadcast (regardless of perceived or not). These signals can travels for miles (even from Space). They create "false/positive" results. Great care in preparation and Screening must be taken. EVP has shown some interesting results in many famous Cases. The phenomenon will no doubt remain a "hot topic" for many more years to come.
