Another Welsh Myth, The Derwyn Corph or "Corpse Bird", goes back to the 16th Century. These "Phantom Birds" were thought to be "evil Spirits" that took the form of a "menacing looking bird" (often a large, Black Crow). The Creature will "haunt" through home of a person near death. They will "peck" rapidly at a window or door repeatedly, as if seeking entrance. Allowing a Corpse Bird to enter one's home was thought to be doom to the I'll person. The Creature would "collect" his or her soul. Many associated The Corpse Bird legends with a possible creative design for American Gothic Writer Edgar Allen Poe's immortal Poem, "The Raven".
